Slide guitar refers to the practice of using a particular object to create a sliding motion against the strings, as opposed to the common fretting motion. The most common type of slide guitar is played using a bottleneck, and that is what we will be talking about here.

Use a guitar setup with slightly higher action, so there is a lower chance of the slide banging against the frets. Touch the strings lightly with the slide; don’t apply too much pressure. o Use strings you are comfortable with. Strings are largely a matter of personal choice and comfort, so find strings that work for you. In general, however, thicker strings are recommended. It is much more difficult to get a good sound with super-light strings. • Start off with the first string. For the first week that you play slide guitar, play only on the first string of your guitar. Position yourself at the 5th fret and slide back and forth, aiming for a clean sound. • Vibrato. This means quickly raising and lowering the pitch of a note in small portions. Vibrato is an important technique for slide guitar because it has the potential to really give your slide playing a nice personal touch – you can manipulate vibrato to create a specific mood. You can hear some trademark vibrato in the works of guitar greats such as BB King and Muddy Waters. When playing vibrato, keep a few things in mind. The first string is the best place to learn vibrato. Position your slide at the 5th fret, and rapidly move it on a note in a left-right movement. While doing this, remember to keep your wrist very relaxed, to help you produce a smooth, shimmering sound.
• Practice. There are no shortcuts! Practice and practice till slide guitar comes as naturally to you as singing. Don’t forget to listen to a lot of slide guitar music.

The Oregon music community is mourning the tragic loss of producer and drummer Kipp Daniel Crawford who was killed in the middle of the night on November 11, when he was struck by drunk drivers on North Willamette Blvd. having somehow fallen from his bike. Sadly, he was only 31. Kipp’s influence as a human and a musician is evidenced by the scores and scores of beautiful and kind messages that have poured into blogs and websites.

“He loved nature, the outdoors, and was never caught up in any hipster bullshit in the music scene or any other. He was funny, passionate, and a hell of a bad ass on the drums, very innovative, musical and creative. He is irreplaceable. He’s probably sitting in with the Angel Band as we speak….” Celilo singer Sloan Martin blogged of his friend and band mate.

The intelligent and talented Kipp touched so many lives musically as he was one of those hot shot drummers that everyone wanted to play with. Why did Susan Boyle’s Album, I Dreamed a Dream, beats Amazon’s pre-ordered sales records

This Sunday I watched the news on our Spanish television, and a headline with a short report came up. “Susan Boyle’s debut CD sets Amazon pre-ordered sales record”. I do not recall to have heard Susan sing any song for the Album, I Dreamed a Dream, in the trailer, but I remembered a picture of the “woman”; ..”ugly” even a little “silly” looking, with a terrible haircut and hairy eyebrows. My first thought was that I had seen Susan Boyle’s mother’s images and not the artist herself.

Before I continue, I may first introduce myself a little. I am German (excusing my deficient English), living in Spain, married to a lovely Spanish woman and father of a wonderful 14 years old teenager Yes! A Teenager, but still wonderful!). I am working all day and have little time to watch television. As I never had heard the name Susan Boyle, I asked my daughter whether she knew anything about Susan and her new Album, I Dreamed a Dream.

She looked at me with this cynical look of hers, like saying “Pa you are living behind the moon”, and replied “You have not heard of Susan Boyle? ..Really? .. O.k. She is a singer from the English TV realty show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. The show is similar to the Spanish equivalent ‘Operacion Triunfo’. She was the sensation!” “And why that?” I replied. Again, she looked at me with this cynical expression, slightly shaking her head, about to continue, but then changed her mind and simply said. “That’s a surprise Pa. If you want to know more, then have a look on internet. It’s worthwhile!”

Looking at her smiling face and knowing my teenager daughter, it was very clear that she would not tell mi a single word more about Susan Boyle’s “sensational” performance in the Britain’s Got Talent show. I would have to research for myself. I asked her whether the “woman” on the TV had been Susan Boyle, and she nodded, confirming the “impossible”.

Now I was completely intrigued and headed directly to my PC. When I looked “Susan Boil” up in Yahoo there was nothing. I thought, “Well, Susan Boil can’t be that important if I can’t find her name in yahoo”. Then I tried Google and got the hint “Did you mean ‘Susan Boyle’?”. Oooops! Google was right, and I am ignorant! There were pages and pages of search results for Susan Boyle, including pictures of this “sensational” woman. Also the title of Susan’s new (debut) album, I Dreamed a Dream, was al over the place. An album that has not even been published! Dreamed a Dream, will be published officially on November 22nd.

One of the first entries was the YouTube video titled “Susan Boyle – Singer – Britains Got Talent 2009 (With Lyrics)”. That lookes interesting, click and go..

The video loaded in high definition mode. The first images, Susan, sitting in the back, having a big bite into her sandwich, in a way that it seemed as if she wanted to eat it all in one go, including the tips of her fingers. Then a few backstage sequences of Susan with the final phrase “I’m gone a make that audience rock!” What a statement! This woman, “uglier” than I recalled, dressed according to the rest of her appearance, what would make her performance so “sensational”? Was this “show” of self esteeming just a bluff? Either Susan was totally “nuts”, or ..I don’t know what to say…

The following sequences are amazing; Susan walks onto the stage with all her pride and courage, exposing herself to the humiliation and desperation that will follow, without doubt. Asked about where she comes from gets stuck, but very naturally finds her way out; then, asked about her age, 47, shows a wonderful sense of humour with her peculiar “belly dance”. You can tell that she is enjoying her “Dream”! Susan Boyle has nothing to loose, and she is living this moment that will never come back.

Flashes of people’s faces and expressions, ranging from pain through amusement and laughing to incredibility make me feel glad for her that she is not able to see those expressions from her spot far up on the stage jordan heels , against the blinding lights. I would have run away, thats for sure abercrombie !

But Susan stays! No doubting seems to overcome our brave Susan Boyle. Asked about who she would like to be successful as, Susan, without shame, but rather convinced, names a famous star. No need to describe the expressions on the crowds faces.

Then Susan begins.. singing her song, “I Dreamed a Dream”.. Within seconds the whole atmosphere changes. Her voice seems to embrace all. The peoples faces first freeze, but then quickly warm up and astounding and joy is everywhere. The audience is applauding enthusiastically, screaming and giving standing ovations. The crowd “rocks”! ..Susan Boyle has fulfilled her Dream. Finished her song, she sends a kiss to her audience, turns around and is about to leave the stage (as if she did not want to spoil this memory of her dream), but the jury calls her back. Susan turns around and with firm steps takes her spot on the stage again, awaiting what is about to come.

No need to say that she had passed the exam with outstanding results.

Amanda defines very well the crowd, and myself. “I know that everybody was against you. We were all being very cynical, and this has been the biggest wakeup call ever..”

Simon describes Susan I with one clear phrase; “Susan, you are a little Tiger, arent you?” Yes! Susan Boyle is a Tiger, and not one of the small kinds. I am trying to imagine how much she had to fight against herself and all the odds, but Susan did not give up! She finally managed to live the dream she dreamed.

Now, while I am writing this small article, I take a small break and watch Susan Boyle’s first performance again. The same happens to me as when I saw her yesterday. Tears are rolling down my chicks. She definitely has stroke my heart abercrombie , this small, ugly tiger!

On Sunday, November 21, 2009, there were 77,023,361 views of Susan’s YouTube video “Susan Boyle – Singer – Britains Got Talent 2009 (With Lyrics)”. How many tears and joy may this 7:07 minutes have given the world? How many talented people may there be out there that have not had the chance to live the dream they dreamed or did not even dare to dream?

So, ..Why did Susan Boyle’s Album, I Dreamed a Dream, beat Amazon’s pre-ordered sales records?
I went to amazon.co.uk and found already 50 very positive reviews on Susan’s unpublished debut Album; I then listened to the trailers of the 12 songs onthe Album titled,… guess what!… “I Dreamed a Dream”. The reviews were very positive and I like a lot the songs, but nothing convinced me more than the moment I enjoyed together with Susan, when she lived her Dream.

P.S. Today is Monday, November 22nd, and I am curious to see how many albums of Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” are still available on Amazon. I first go to Amazon.co.uk and, no surprise, only 6 CD’s left. I then go to Amazon.com and find another 13 Albums. My wife calls me for lunch, and I return an hour later. Now all “I Dreamed a Dream” CD’s are gone! I missed my chance . This would have been a wonderful gift for my wife (and myself ).

I will have to wait until Susan Boyle’s Album is on stock again. But there is a handy website that will alert me immediately for any product on Amazon when it returns into stock again. Long before Need You Now was even released abercrombie outlet , Lady Antebellum issued the title track of the album as a single. The song shot straight to the top of the charts and remained there for over five weeks. So this album has been released with much hype and publicity and for darn good reason.
Lady Antebellum is a songwriting trio with Charles Kelly and Hillary Scott as the lead vocalists and backing vocalist Dave Haywood. Haywood is also a very good musician who plays multiple instruments. His guitar work is very good on this record.
This is the groups 2nd release and it is very similar to the debut record that was released last year. There is a great mix of songs on Need You Now with most being mid tempo love songs. There is also a very sad ballad as well as some good old-fashioned rocked out songs. This is what makes this such a great record that there are such a variety of styles and tempo’s.
Kelly has a great singing voice and the song that he shines on is “Love This Pain” which is a slow rocker which could possibly be the next single. Scott also has a great voice but it is not as distinguished as Kelly’s. The tune “Stars Tonight” is the party anthem of the record and has a great guitar riff with a very catchy chorus as well. It seems that every country band must have a group party song these days but it works well.

I was thinking about music (part 1)

Sometimes, ironically, I find it hard to talk about music. That’s because it’s so much a part of my life, that I can’t step back and look at it objectively anymore.
I’m not sure what started me down this path, but I’m going to guess that Walt Disney is the one responsible. The first movie I saw was “Sleeping Beauty.” I don’t remember anything about it from that first viewing except that the queen turning into the dragon scared the living bejeebies out of me. But the first record I can remember owning was a picture book tour of Disneyland, and I distinctly remember the section about all the different countries, with the soundtrack of “It’s A Small World” playing on my tiny plastic turntable.
Wonder whatever happened to that record…
Another early memory of music was being enamored with the TV show S.W.A.T. (later revamped like everything else into a feature film starring Sam Jackson.) What theme music! From the first squeal of the alarm bells going off to the last crash of the orchestra, I was hooked. I used to set my toy guys up against the wall so I could run past and grab them just like the guys did in the intro. I don’t know how old I was before I realized that the UPS truck wasn’t the team’s special rolling headquarters.
(Strange that the only other memory I have of the 70’s was of hearing “Calling Dr. Love” from Kiss on the radio, and absolutely needing to have that record. Until I saw the front cover. It was probably six or seven years before I could listen to them again. But that’s another story…)
The one thing that came from all these different experiences was my growing love of music. The first instrument I “played” was a toy drum kit my parents bought me. (They promptly regretted that move.) Then I started trumpet lessons. I can’t really point to why I chose that instrument. Maybe it was because of Doc Severson, the bandleader for Johnny Carson. (For anyone under the age of 25, Carson was the host of “The Tonight Show” before Jay Leno, and will always be the reigning king of late night. But, again, that’s another story…)
My mother used to tell me that it sounded like a moose dying in my bedroom. I would just look at her funny nike heels , and go on blowing that horn for all it was worth. And then I discovered Chuck Mangione. Chuck actually played a flugelhorn coach purses outlet , a deeper cousin of the trumpet. I thought that was so exotic. I can remember sitting in front of the stereo listening to the record “Feels So Good” and staring at Chuck hugging his horn on the cover with a look of pure joy and contentment on his face. Looking back on it, I think it may have been that picture that really did it for me. Seeing his love of his instrument made me understand what music was. It was something that was a part of a person, that can give utter satisfaction like nothing else in the world can.
So then I was hooked. I started to explore, to seek out these magical masters of brass. I learned about Dizzy Gillespie, he of the puffed out cheeks and bend bell. (Seriously, check out a picture of the guy playing, it’s a trip.) I listened to Maynard Ferguson. I heard Louie Armstrong, first as a trumpet player, then as an incredible singer. “What A Wonderful World” is my favorite song of all time.
But, along with Chuck, the one who really sent me over the edge was Herb Alpert. Along with his Tijuana Brass, Herb turned me onto a whole different world of music. Now it wasn’t just about the American experience. Now I was starting explore the world, and I was heading south for my first stop. Suddenly, I wasn’t thinking of guys in sweaters and felt hats five fingers shoes , or dimly lit jazz clubs where the effort to play that thing like you meant it was rolling down the musician’s face in rivers of sweat. Now it was about brightly colored clothes and bullfights and beautiful girls and celebrating life. Herb took me places that I had never known existed, and I wanted to go.
